OAK HILL ACADEMY IS TOP PRIVATE SCHOOL AT REGIONAL MATH COUNTS COMPETITION

On Saturday, February 2 nd Oak Hill Academy participated in a tri-county Math Counts competition held at Union County College.  Oak Hill faced several public, private, and parochial schools from Monmouth, Union, and Middlesex Counties.

This competition, sponsored by several organizations including the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Texas Instruments and CNA Insurance, consists of three levels of testing.

The first round is a 30-question test completed in 40 minutes without the aid of a calculator.  Each of the questions gets progressively more difficult as the round continues.

The second round is comprised of eight questions. Competitors are given two questions at a time and they have six minutes to solve them.

The third round is comprised of ten very challenging questions. A four-person team work together to complete the questions in 20 minutes.

Not only did Oak Hill Academy, led by math teacher, Rita Cotterell, finish as the top private School, but also 8 th grader, Michael Gao, qualified for the lightening round and an opportunity to compete Rutgers in the State Tournament. 

Monmouth County Private School

On Saturday, March 9, Gao competed in the state tournament.  Michael finished tied for 3 rd before the head to head lightening round, and ultimately finished 6 th place in the State of New Jersey!!  He was the only student (public or private) from the Region (Monmouth, Union & Middlesex Counties) to make the Top 10!
