Oak Hill Academy Veterans Day
Oak Hill Kindergarten recite the Pledge of Allegiance with Middletown Township Color Guard, Air Force Airman and Miss Patrice Murray

On November 6 th , Oak Hill Academy students, staff, parents and honored guests carried on its tradition of honoring veterans during the school’s 19 th annual Veterans Day program.  Over 100 students in Pre-Kindergarten through 8 th grade performed by creating various tributes, doing dramatic readings, singing solos, and playing instruments. There was also a professional brass duo, a professional singer, and the Christian Brothers Academy Pipes and Drums under the direction of Brother Frank Byrne, CBA President, who played six different musical selections to “wow” everyone in attendance.

Patrice Murray, Director of Personnel/Administration, organized the annual program.  Each year, she chooses a theme that will educate the students on a different aspect relating to the service of our veterans.

The Middletown Township Police Color Guard, presented the colors at the opening of the program, while the Kindergarten led the school in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance. Under the direction of Oak Hill music teacher, Mrs. Pamela Momyer, all those in attendance sang the “Star Spangled Banner.”

This year, the themes were “Vietnam Veterans Memorial”, “Medal of Honor”, “Tuesday Tucks Me In”, and the “Military Alphabet,” amongst the traditional core themes of “Who is a Veteran,” and the “History of Veterans Day”.

Why a Veterans Day Program?

Miss Murray’s innovative idea was born in November of 2001 after the tragic events of September 11th.   She decided that Oak Hill as a school should recognize and honor those in the military who fought and are still fighting for our freedom and protection.

Veterans who were in attendance were recognized throughout the program. All Veterans relate to all members of the Oak Hill community were also recognized during a video tribute accompanied by Mrs. Momyer on piano and 8 th grader, Matthew Kim on cello.

Finally, Patrice Murray asked that each veteran stand and be recognized as the trumpet duo of Thomas and Janet Bender played “A Tribute to the Armed Services” accompanied by Mrs. Momyer on piano. She said, “We salute you, we thank you.” The audience responded with much ovation for these special guests.

The playing of “Taps” along with a moment of silence concluded the program.

The Veterans Day program has become an important tradition at Oak Hill Academy. The youngest generation is learning about all of our veterans and the greatest generation too. They have learned to honor, respect, and revere those in uniform.
