Boys Soccer Team captures crown

On October 30, the Oak Hill Academy Boys Soccer Team defeated the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School from Asbury Park by the score of 5-2 to capture the Ferris Antoon / Jim Carrigan Monmouth County Intermediate School Soccer League (MCISSL) Liberty Conference title. Oak Hill hosted the championship as the higher seed and “Division F” champions after the gritty team from Asbury Park upset #1 seed St. Leo’s in a penalty kick shootout on Monday.

The Game

It was a drizzly day, but the pitch was groomed and ready for the Championship match. Many members of the Oak Hill community (parents, students and teachers) braved the rainy day to show their support for this team. Oak Hill 8 ^th grader, Dimitry Corba, opened the scoring in the 8 ^th minute on a left footed blast that skipped past the MLK keeper.  Corba made it 2-0 on a direct kick outside the box, but Asbury Park countered 2 minutes later on a phenomenal individual effort by #11 to make it 2-1 Oak Hill going into halftime.

Oak Hill defense led by 8 ^th graders, Will Gilfillan, Stefan Wenzelburger, Dylan Thackeray and 7 ^th grader Andrew Lin along with goalkeeper, Ian Cameron, clamped down in the defensive third while both our MCISSL All-Stars, Dimitry and classmate, Mitchell Oldham, added goal each 6 minutes apart to make the score 4-1 with 10 minutes to play in the game.

Asbury Park’s #10 broke through on a terrific run to make it 4-2 in the 55 ^th minute, but Dimitry capped his Ferris Antoon / Jim Carrigan MVP day off with goal #4 2 minutes later for a final score of 5-2. The Most Valuable Player award is named for the first two Presidents of the league. 

First Title in 28 years!

It was a true team effort as all 21 team members contributed at some point as the Mustangs put together their best and most cohesive game of the season to defeat Asbury for the third time this fall. They finished with a final record of 10-1-1, and it was the first title for the boys in 28 seasons (1991)! Congratulation to Coach Bruckmann and the 2019 Mustangs!
